Literature Review for High School Research: A Practical Guide
A literature review is not a list of summaries. It is an argument about what is already known, what is uncertain, and where your study can contribute.
For high school researchers, this is often the most skipped step—yet it determines whether your project is original, feasible, and methodologically sound.
What a good literature review does
A strong review should do four things:
- Define the topic boundaries (population, time period, context, variables)
- Synthesize patterns (agreement, disagreement, gaps)
- Evaluate quality (strong methods vs weak evidence)
- Lead to your research question
If your review cannot justify your question, your question is not ready.
Step 1: Start with a search strategy, not random Googling
Use a simple search plan:
- Databases: Google Scholar, PubMed (health), SSRN/RePEc (econ/finance), JSTOR (social sciences)
- Search strings: combine keywords with Boolean logic (AND, OR, NOT)
- Filters: publication year, peer-reviewed, language, study type
Example:
`("sleep duration" AND adolescents AND academic performance) NOT college`
Track what you search in a log (date, terms, database, useful results).
Step 2: Screen and select sources systematically
Use inclusion/exclusion criteria before reading deeply.
Inclusion examples:
- Ages 13–18
- Quantitative or mixed-method empirical studies
- Published in last 10 years (unless foundational)
Exclusion examples:
- Opinion pieces with no data
- Studies on unrelated populations
- Duplicates or low-credibility outlets
This avoids confirmation bias and saves time.
Step 3: Extract evidence into a matrix
Build a table with columns like:
- Citation
- Research question
- Sample and setting
- Method
- Key findings
- Limitations
- Relevance to your study
A matrix helps you compare studies instead of treating each paper in isolation.
Step 4: Synthesize by themes, not by author
Weak structure: “Smith (2020) said…, Lee (2021) said…”
Stronger structure:
- Theme A: studies showing positive effects
- Theme B: studies showing null or mixed effects
- Theme C: methodological reasons for disagreement
Then ask: What explains these different findings? (sample size, measurement choices, context, identification strategy).
Step 5: Identify the gap carefully
A “gap” is not just “no one studied this exact school.”
Meaningful gaps include:
- Understudied subgroup
- Better measurement approach
- Clearer causal design
- Replication in a new context with justification
Your study should close a gap that matters, not a trivial gap.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Over-relying on blogs/news instead of primary research
- Treating all studies as equally credible
- Ignoring contradictory evidence
- Writing a descriptive summary without synthesis
- Claiming novelty without proof

- Thematic synthesis of findings
- Methodological strengths/limitations in the literature
- Research gap
- Your proposed question and why it follows logically
