Quantitative vs Qualitative Research: What High School Students Need to Know

Students often ask: Should I use numbers, or should I use interviews? That’s the core of quantitative vs qualitative research.

The truth: one is not “better” than the other. The right choice depends on your research question.

Quantitative research (numbers and measurement)

Quantitative research focuses on data you can count and statistically analyze.

Examples:

  • Surveying 200 students about daily study hours
  • Measuring plant growth under different light conditions
  • Comparing exam scores before and after a study intervention

Best for questions like:

  • How many?
  • How much?
  • Is there a relationship between X and Y?

Strengths:

  • Easier to compare large groups
  • Supports graphs and statistical testing
  • Helpful for identifying trends

Limitations:

  • May miss emotional or contextual details
  • Depends heavily on data quality

Qualitative research (meaning and depth)

Qualitative research explores experiences, perceptions, and reasons.

Examples:

  • Interviewing students about exam stress
  • Analyzing open-ended responses about social media use
  • Studying classroom behavior through observations

Best for questions like:

  • Why?
  • How?
  • What is the experience of…?

Strengths:

  • Rich, detailed insights
  • Better for complex human behavior
  • Great for exploring new topics

Limitations:

  • Smaller sample sizes
  • Harder to generalize findings
  • Analysis can be time-intensive

Can students use both?

Yes—this is called mixed methods.

Example: Run a short survey (quantitative) to find patterns, then conduct interviews (qualitative) to understand why those patterns exist.

How to choose quickly

Use this decision rule:

  • Need measurable comparison? → Quantitative
  • Need depth and explanation? → Qualitative
  • Need both pattern + reason? → Mixed methods

Choose your method based on the question, not on what sounds more advanced.
